New School Uniform Rules in England
From September 2026, new school uniform rules apply in England.
The Department for Education (DfE) requires schools to limit the number of compulsory branded school uniform and PE-kit items to three or fewer. For secondary and middle schools, the limit is four or fewer where one of the items is a tie.
Importantly, this does not mean that every PE item has to be branded. Schools can decide which compulsory items they want to brand, while other required items can be generic.
For example, a school could choose a branded PE shirt while allowing pupils to wear generic PE shorts.
The rules are designed to help schools keep uniform costs manageable while maintaining school identity. Schools are also expected to consider factors such as affordability, quality and durability when selecting uniform items and suppliers.
